To me nature is " the birth of venus," by botticelli. Venus has nature all around her. The ocean and the wind. Venus as a goddess is also ideal for painting nature. Venus being blown around in a shell. Venus the god of love she is being born through nature. The medium is definitly oil on canvas, since in botticellis time there was no such thing as acyrilc, pastels or photography. Some would call this pornography however i disagree it is classical art! There is a sense of implied motion when one of the gods are blowing the wind towards her. This is such a beautiful painting and such a beautiful representation of Nature.
Nature is perfect as the way it is. Nature doesn’t have an specific form. Many landscape architects try to create landscapes as close as to the original ones found in the Mother Nature, but is hard to create this because nature doesn’t follow a pattern, nature is a pure space where no human can touch it to modify it. It is always changing and will ever be changing. Nature gives the calm and peace that humans need, for example the Central Park located in NYC, provides relaxation to the hard working people. New York is a crowded city and urban city where nature is very rare to found, this park reminds the people that it does exist and can provide with comfort to their minds and souls. NY is an active city that never sleeps; the traffic creates stress and anxiety, people need a place to forget about all the problems and stress and this park helps them a lot. Technology modifies the nature for example architects build roads in valleys and forests, this changes nature’s appearance. Now days is hard to keep nature as the way it is because the population is increasing and increasing that we, humans, have to modify it more and more. By: Sandra Garcia
I like what Mr. Stubblefield said, that an untouched landscape is only the ones that are painted. Robert Smithson's "Spiral jetty" intrigued me, its made of simple, natural material in the middle of no where, and left there to disintegrate over time as nature and life does. I liked the sculptures that showed the king choking the lions, Ashurbunipal Killing Lions. They showed the king have tremendous amount of power; he beat the kings of the forest. The king is king of all things, his people and nature. Nature is not perfect, if it were it would look like a jungle, everyone's perception of nature is different, as well of it's perfectness.~Faraz Hussain
Two images that really cought my eye was that of the "Serpent Mound" and "Spiral Jetty" by Robert Smithson. In a weird way, the serpent is kind of creepy. The fact that no one really knows who built it or the purpose for this, gives it a some what out of this world kind of feeling. Even though it is a serpent, it is so beautiful. It almost seem real and it blends in with its surroundings. The "Spiral Jetty"really relates to the theme of the week. The spiral not only absorbs its natural surroundings, changing the way it look and its presense. Obviously it had human made, but all the materials and surroundings are from mother earth. Another example would be the gardens in Paris and New York. New York's Central Park is almost like a resort. It is so beautiful, yet it's in the middles of one of the most populated cities in the U.S. Like with the quote Mr. Stubblefield read, gardens are so artificial yet they look so real. Distiguishing each other is hard, but they both send the same message. -R.Sierra
The wanderer above the mists was the painting that captured my attention. The way the you look at the painting makes you feel as if you are looking down at the world from heaven. In a way it is like the man is standing on top of Mount Olympus and is just surrounded by clouds that is a wonder of nature itself. When you look at the painting you feel like god yourself looking down on your subjects which is the human race. The way nature is shown in this painting it shows the mist swirling around the mountains like a yogurt cone around the mountains concealing the moutains true beauty. The sun is also shining bright showing of f a beautiful picture of what nature truely is In a way the top of a mountain can never be altered by humans because nature is wild and unpredicable. At the top of a mountain the winds can not be tamed, it can be as cold as ice or as gentle as a breeze but in a way nature can be deadly. The person in the painting looks like a person of the upper class that is dressed in a tuxedo and a walking cane. That to me was the wrong oufit to wear if you are climbing a mountain. But the overall impression that you get from looking at the is man in the painting is that he is over the higher class and he feels like his God himself overseeing this perfect world above. Cause for all we know the image below the mist might show a more dismal outlook in the town the rich man has to live in. To me this a great painting that represents nature.
Most of these weeks lectures have been on the beauty of landscaping. We can see how many artist have created landscapings throughout the world, with the goal of making seem if it was natural. The one that I most like was Central Park in Manhattan,NY. It is amazing the type scenery provided by this park. And to think that it is in the middle of one of the largest cities in the world. Very Interesting.
In art we can show how much we admire nature and beauty. Art can communicate knowledge that cannot be clearly articulated. "Spiral Jetty" by Robert Smithson is very interesting that it was built in the middle of nowhere using natural material. Nature is slowly disapearing and the Spiral Jetty is also disapearing. Nature can give us the calm and peace we need. It is amazing that there is a park in the middle of the largest city NY where people can go to face nature.
Nature and landscaping are both huge pieces of art. throughout this wee we focused on paintings in which their landscaping had a huge role on the painting. the painting "Serpent Mound" by Robert Smithson was very intresting. It had a very unique look to it which in some ways was some what creepy. The Serpent fits nicely into the painting although it is such a bizarre creature. **Jason Bahramian
One work of art that is extremely effective in portaying the current cultural perspective on nature is the "Spiral Jetty". It's location being extremely remote, and it's maintenance being independent of man is a large symbol of it's isolation, which is what present culture believes nature should be. Isolation and independence from humans. Nature is seen to be most perfect when it is without the presence of man. Another work that embodies this is the work of the landscape gardens, which try and illustrate nature as being undiscover and untouched by man. This makes the experience feel more authentically "natural" for those who enter. The idea of nature is merely an artifical construction of the present culture, however, a construction that art plays a large role in. Artwork such as the Spiral Jetty and landscape gardens help to promote this cultural idea of nature. - Velez, Jesse
I know everybody is posting about the spiral jetty but that was the art work the caught my attention the most. It was just so massive and different and thats why im chosing to talk about it. Its art thats alive and always changing wheater its the time of year, the tide, or the red algae. It was also costly and time consuming. I like how u talked about how the main point of the art work was for you to experience nature first hand because the art work was so far from any civilization. Another interesting point you made was how you said that the spiral jetty was getting destroyed by nature its self and how people dont know if they should preserve or not. I think that after an artist makes a work of art that it belongs to the people. That being said i feel that future generations deserve to experience his message. After all, when its re made it will start to be consumed by nature once again so its not destroying the message.
With nature knowledge and technology, instead of landscapes i think of the painting of the guys performing an autopsy. To me it seems that at that point the takeover of technology really begun. The nature of things now had to be examined. The nature of landscapes were now being taken over by society.
I liked how we took on so many angles of what nature can mean. The spectrum for nature is so huge that an artist can translate nature in so many ways. The one image that I thought expressed that was "The Monk by the Sea" from Caspar David Friedrich painted in 1810. He fills up more than half of the canvas with sky on the top, ocean in the middle and the ground at the bottom. He was influenced by the "sublime" of what is nature, how it can take in and swallow you in. An experience where the senses are overwhelming. Being a monk he was in touch with his spiritual side and for him nature was everywhere just like god. That nature had the final say because of its size and its power just like god. He saw nature as a mystical and glorious thing. The other painting of his "Wonderer Above the Mist" concludes the same thing. We see man as a little speck and of no importance when he surrounds them with the world around. Nature and beauty means a lot of things to a lot of different people and in art its no different. Artist have been painting, forming, and shaping nature to their standards of beauty. Much of why for man, nature may be constructed through images. -Vasthy V.
This was one of my favorite chapters. I never realized that nature and technolgy can relate. They are both ever growing things that can always be transformed but nature can out grow and is strongger then technology. My favorite image from the book was of the lady who was trying to interconnect with the tree by putting mud and grass all over herself and standing right in front of the tree. This shows that she was trying to be one with nature.
The Adams Ohio Serpent Mounds are very mysterious, but creative. The form and shape along with the size makes me wonder the purpose of this piece. I have always seen these mounds in political cartoons in the history books but they never show the significance. This mound lines where of perfect shape; to the form of an actual snake in the bright green pastures of a golf course. This piece is intertwined to serve its purpose within nature instead of being rejected by it.
