  1. You can find Power, Politics and Glory in various pieces of art across the world. Political portraits are used to put down or praise politics these days. In the past these three aspects were also used in art. You would be able to tell if the certain person was portrayed as confident. Other ways you would be able to tell would be if they had colors such as red on, or if they stand out in the crowd, or are above other people in the painting. In the past artist would have to sometimes hide their meaning of the portrait because the artisit would usually go against the people that were in power.

  2. Art has been used to express power and politics for generations. Every great leader this world has seen has art made about them. Most people that contributed to this world also has art made about them. We have used art to express our views on politics and leaders for generations. we will probably continue to do so generation after generation

  3. politics all through out history have used art to praise their power and glory. Many of the great leaders such as Alexander the Great and Napoleon used portraits to represent their bravery and also their lavish lifestyles. However, there are those leaders such as Hitler and Mao, who used their self portrait to have people worship them. They also flaunted their power and their expensive attire. But also many of the images created by politicians and the goverment are set out to influence their followers and potential followers.

  4. Art is a way of story telling from the past when it comes to painting not so much visual masterpieces but important images that portray an event of great importance in history. Art is not history though, it is a great way to look into events and styles of past generations but are is not around to tell a story it is for people to express their opinions on an event and politics and wars are events that artist have to say a lot about. In Francisco Goya's painting of the French invasion of the Spaniards, he showed his inner feelings by showing the masacre he felt was going on during the invasion. As people of a more modern time we dont know forsure that French troops were destroying every human in sight but since it is Francisco Goya's painting he painted the image the way he felt things were going. These painting also help introduce a lot of Painters ideas to their viewers who can connect with the idea by observing his painting.

  5. Triumph of the Will,Germany,1934. What I see in this picture of the german military ran by Adolf Hitler, showing his strength an having the Nazi order of supremacy. I think, the formal analysis in this realistic picture is the prepareness of Hitler's Army and ready to give off mass destruction at that time against the jews. The german's were under his command, the people were following his gudelines as being a leader of the Nazi's. The soliders were ready to kill an was at some kind of rally where he wanted to prove some kind of point that made Germans follow out his executions towards jews.

  6. I think there are many different examples of power politics and glory. Mao Ze dong was a great example of politics how his image is forever engrained in your brain even though he isn't even alive anymore. He still in the money everywhere in china. Fransico Goya 3rd of may is another great example of the ploys in politics. The represantional in Goyas artwork as if he were there. Another good example of politcs and Power would be " uncle sam wants you," 40's war posters. This picture is very propagandish yet it is engrained in your memory what uncle sam wants. one knows what he looks like an old man with a long beard wearing a a top hat and were small.

  8. Ever since the invention of painting and art, leaders, royal families, people of high status, generals etc, have been portrayed as higher beings in pieces of art. There are always subtle or obvious signs that show the status of the person in the portrait. Whether it be exaggerated or completely true this one fact has still not been changed over the centuries. The pieces of art clearly show that the person in the art is supposed to be respected, thought highly of, loved, and even feared. To show this it all depends on the artist who made the piece or the person who was commissioned to do the art. It is the emotion of the artist.

  9. The power that was shown in the 1800's had to deal with royalty showing off their royal colors and power. The royalty color is either maroon or a red color. Many powerful people also carried a sword in their pictures. This shows their power and strength. A lot of men of royalty took their paintings by their bed which shows power, because many of them had elaborate bed clothes and bed frames.

  10. The most powerful pieces of art representing power, politics, and glory are images of Crist. Crist is always seen as a gloriuos person. The reason for this is becasue millions of people believe and follow him. Religious People not only respect him but to people (audience) he is every part of their life. When God is in an image the audience autimatically relates to it and applies their emotional sences. In images since god is always seemed as a glorious person it seems as if he always is painted to bring peace to an audience. This makes him a powerful person because people obey and worship him and will do almost any thing to follow in his "path". Religous images containg Crist represent political meaning because he is always being compared to the government. Wether Crist is used as a part of a political propaganda to help the government or he is percieved to make people believe the government is bad/ morally wrong, so many people are religious and Crist images make the audience relate themselves to it in one way or another. Another powerful aspect in political images is color. The colors red and gold are used to make the primary person look not only powerful and holy but also strong and confident. Colors can Glorify a ruler.

  11. When I saw the painting of Napoleon I thought wow he looks really powerful for someone of a higher class. The way that the wind made his cape look was even more of a statement. I have noticed in most political paintings that most painters place the leaders astride horses verses other animals that might be better suited for climbing etc. The colors of red white and blue are symbolising that the person has power regaurdless if the person is below one of the higher ups. To me a powerful person represents someone that has a good heart and does things for the good of his people as he or she is representing them in a fair way and not look to pompious in the process when it comes to being power hungry. A powerful person should always put the people before him and the sword he or she carries second when it comes to making hard decisions.

  12. the image presented today in the first group presentation on fascism refelcted the idea that the government was taking control over the cities by all means necessary and they showed no pitty to the citizens and people of the towns. the government was represented as a wolf standing over the city which shows the hunger for power and the celebration of destruction.

  13. art has always been used to praise politics. instead of writing about politics art gives us a visual image on how the artist portrayed gow he felt about people in power. it may portray them as good or even as demeaning people. artist may praise a certain type of government or may even abash another type of government. art in governemnt is imprtant because it give us a central meaning into how a governemnt running by giving us the good or maybe the bad details on how the governemnt runs...

  14. The image we saw today from the first group presentation really caught my eye because of the message it had. Fascism was being celebrated by a very unusual way, by a giant wolf overlooking a burning city with the word FASCISME in burning bold letters above it. The burning city is represented in a very generic way and shows no sign of the suffering villagers which indicate that we should not feel sympathy towards them. The wolf is gigantic in comparison to the city and seems to show the power and strength of the fascist ideology. The wolf has a hungry look on his face, has his mouth open, and his tongue out which give us a feeling of power hunger within the fascist party its self. This makes a lot of sense after learning that fascists celebrated violence.

  15. I think that today's group presentation was perfectly executed and we should all follow. I liked what Juan said earlier about the wolf representing the government. I thought that the wolf was the greedy, empathetic, politicians that would be willing to sacrifice the inhabitants of the many cities in order to achieve their own goals. The word |Fascisme, has many meanings, for instance it could be Facinate Me. The unknown artist did a good job of illuminating this so called fascist government before it became a real potential threat.I have a feeling that someone will find this picture and say something about President Obama.

  16. In history, whenever I saw pictures of important leaders in the past, I noticed they all looked the same. They all had the similar poses and were all adorned in very expensive looking fabrics. If you look deeper into it however, you realize that the way the artist paints the picture really does try to convey the person in the highest way possible. They'd paint them in colors such as purple because purple was the most expensive dye. They'd carry swords so it makes them look like they were fit to fight for their country. The artist paints them so they look higher than us and always staring down at us to give an effect that they really are higher than us.

  17. Power, politics, and glory, our country has been run these three aspects since we first broke off from our mother country. These three concepts are vital in convincing people to sway towards a certain government idea or name. Whether its from using propaganda arts like the kim jong faces or sudan faces to drill the image into your head. or if its from paintings like our groups trying to scare people into picking their form of government. It is clear from the painting today that one can easily draw something that can affect millions of people.

In politics artist play a big role in helping communicate the issues surrounding the nation. Even though most of the paintings are bias, it makes citizens aware of issues in many different point of views. Throughout the years politics have been using art to change the way citizens look at them as. For example in the Middle East the leaders had enlarged sculptures of themselves throught the states. This would remind the community of who's in power and untouchable.

  19. Politics is usually a hard subject to digest, but when it is in art form it is more horrific and realistic because it becomes more understandable and hits close to home. When an artist is able to depict such a crime such as war crimes to even crimes of hate with a passion it makes the audience more politicaly aware of the situation and to look for resolutions to prevent what has happened in the past from repeating itself in the future. Art shows the how power can over throw those in power or hurt those who are made out to be examples. Throughout history art has been the outlet to make people aware of the social world that had once existed and has modernized itself; without art there would be no documentation of what was only speculation for art is the photo of the past and the creation of the future.

  20. Power, Politics, and Glory have played a major componet in art. From images to christ all the way to the president Art has been a way of showing power and glory without words. At times these images can become a propaganda to enforce the power a leader has over a group. Tyrants in paticular show the same picture over and over to almost engrave their image to the people and have the immortality of being remembered for a whole generation and perhaps more. Going on in a sillier note the arches of Mcdonalds is almost an international symbol and power of the western civilization imposed on different countries.

Especially during earlier days the rich and powerful were the only ones to really afford to be drawn. So having a self portriat is a sign of superiority and wealth. Most of the times these portraits were drawn with the figure drawned as in an almost heroic stance and a gallant stare. Is it certain they actually looked like that? Maybe not. These drawing could have tweaked the actual looks of a person in order to achieve a more powerful look.

  21. So far I think this subject is very interesting! I find that the artistic devices used to glorify a ruler's image; idealization, symbolism, and compositional elements can be found in all images made for the purpose of power, politics and glory. One of the most powerful tactics used was manipulating proportion. LIke the Egyptians had to follow and use the required dimensions that the kingdom set as rules. They used this same image as repetition to embed it into the persons mind. Their message; to have an ever presence as a ruler anywhere and everywhere. Egyptians made great works that carried as heavy material and made in a closed form. allowing the objects to be magnified.
As for power, politics and glory...our past holds lots of it, our present is creating much more of it and our future will be filled with it.
Good thing art will be there along the way to capture it all!

As we all have seen art has had a major impact in power, politics, and glory. Though the majority of the pieces we have seen have been mostly surrounding propagandistic subject matter. I was so pleased to see this pattern broken after today's meeting and being presented the black and white photograph of Former President Nixon leaving the White House for a final time. It was such an intimate and touching piece. It evoked such a genuine feeling of closeness with a President, which is normally a chance our nation is never exposed to. It shined a light to a different side of a man, surpassing all our negative preconceptions as a nation. With this photograph it almost feels as if we have been shown something which was not allowed to be known. It was beautiful to see a political art piece not involving persuasion or any other alterior tactics. This piece was simply raw emotion, art in it's purest form.

  23. It seems to me that political themed artworks have the most historical context. There is always a story to be told behind the subject. Political paintings always seem to show its subject as a dominant and powerful person in history in an elegant manner. The picture of Napoleon Bonaparte by Jacques-Louis David is a prime example. The subject is painted with pristine clothing and a show horse, yet rides to a supposed battlefield. Techniques like this are used to glorify the political "heroes" and give them a sense of hierarchy and grace.

  24. Art has popularized, promoted or, propagandized government and the people who lead them. Art can play a big role in promoting the power of a ruler. Palace, government buildings, and monuments can make the state and the ruler seem powerful and glorious. War is part of the story of power, politics and glory. Works of art that depict war can rouse the passion for war, empahsize the horror of the war, and give different views of the battle.

  25. Throughout the years, we have seen that most of the emperors, presidents, kings etc have used art as a way to transmit their power, the person that is in power self-aggrandize their image just so people can respect them and fear them. For example Napoleon had a complex about is height, he was smart and powerful, but his height killed everything. With the use of the artwork his height didn’t show. Another example is the president Barack Obama, he used simple color for his campaign, colors that people would be identified with, Also his expression show confidence, hope and honesty. Maybe with this image he convinced a lot of people. Art influences a lot in every aspect of our life.

  26. My favorite painting on this topic is the one by Jan Van Eych titled "The Arnolfini Marrage." you basically have all the topics going on here. In terms of gender, the woman is pregnant and on the side of the bed, thus enforcing the stereotype that a womans place is in the house. For the male, he is by the window, thus saying that his place is in the working world, bringing home that bacon. This painting alse shows that they are wealthy because of the mirror in the back. Back in those days it cost a lot of money to own a mirror. I also love this painting because the medium is oil on canvas, it really makes a difference in how the couple is percieved rather than just a photograph.-Joshua Tabatt
